Butterfly Cake

Last weekend we created a cake for a special Sweet Sixteen birthday. Such a milestone birthday definitely deserves a spectacular cake to mark the occasion. The birthday girl picked one of our favourites cakes ever – our Rainbow Butterfly Cake!  I truly loved making this cake, it’s just such a pretty and happy cake and never fails to bring a smile to my face.

The cake is a riot of colour with hues from the whole rainbow spectrum!  The butterflies are just so pretty with their delicate wings caught in mid-flutter as they rest on the cake.  The whole cake is edible as the butterflies are made of vanilla flavoured rice-paper.

One bonus of having a two-tier cake is not only does it provide extra drama and height (and of course more yummy cake!), you can pick multiple flavours too!  This particular cake had  a bottom tier of red velvet cake with tangy lemon buttercream and a top tier of vanilla cake with with strawberry buttercream.

Here are a couple more pics of the cake.  Enjoy!

Oreo Pop Rattles

Last week I also made these baby rattles for a baby shower.  The rattles are oreo pops!  What’s not to love?  Chocolate covered oreo cookies in a bright red and white colour combo.  And baby rattles are just a super-cute reminder of the bundle of joy that is come.  They go perfectly with the baby shower cupcakes.

Baby Shower Cupcakes

Just finished a batch of red velvet cupcakes decorated for a baby shower.  The decorations feature a red and white theme and lots of happy baby designs.  And of course a dragon design for a baby to be born in the Year of the Dragon! Congratulations to the pregnant mummy-to-be!

Boy or Girl?

Pregnant? Are you going to find out if you are having a boy or a girl?  Have you heard of the gender reveal parties that are all the rage at the moment?  No?

A gender reveal party is an event where you tell your friends and family if you are expecting a little boy or a little girl.  The cake is the centre of attention and holds the secret!  Frosted in a pristine white, it hides either a pink or a blue interior.  That way when it’s sliced into, it’ll reveal the gender of the baby.

Want to be truly surprised?  You don’t even have to find out the gender of the baby first.  Get your obstetrician or ultrasound technician to write it on a slip of paper and place it in a sealed envelope.  Then hand that envelope to your baker!

This could easily be combined with a baby shower.  What a great way to celebrate the impending arrival of the baby and to tell your friends and family the gender in the truly unique way.  Just make sure your obstetrician is super certain of the result and no one minds if it turns out to be a boy or a girl!

Calendar Cookies

Calendar cookies

I came across this idea for Calendar Cookies and I thought they were just fabulous!  They’d be perfect as favours for a wedding, or bridal shower – what a great way to remind people of the special date.  Or if you are feeling particularly brave, perhaps as favours for a baby shower.  You never know, the baby might surprise everyone and pop out right on time!

Baby Shower Invites

I’ve been working on a couple of baby showers recently and wanted to show you some fabulous invites I’ve come across.

Cute animals, like the sweet blue elephant above, are always popular.  And this one is particularly apt as it celebrates the “little peanut” on the way.

And how’s this one for a gorgeous font?  The wording would look simply fantastic on top of cake or as cookie favours.  Love.  And how chic is the soft grey colour scheme?

Nothing beats a strong graphical print.  This invite is super-cheerful.  Get all your duckies in a row!

And lastly, something tongue-in-cheek for the former party girl.  Don’t worry mommy-to-be, there’s definitely still life after baby!

Cameo Cookies

As you know I love customising things.  And what can be more personalised than these cameo cookies?  I love that they would be essentially unique to you (or whomever you ordered them for) as it’d be your face on it!  Wouldn’t these be perfect as birthday party or wedding favours?

OR as a very cool item for a baby shower, we could do the cameo using an ultrasound image of the baby’s face.  I was always staring at the ultrasound pics when I was pregnant, trying to make out from that fuzzy image what my baby might look like.  This would be a perfect way to “show” your unborn baby to your guests!  We could also make the cameo as a centrepiece cake for the event.
